Using Your Client’s Cleaning Products or Providing Your Own

Cleaning ProductsI get a lot of questions about running a residential cleaning business. One of the common issues is the client who wants you to use their cleaning products.

This is one of the major decisions you need to make before you start your house cleaning business.  Are you going to use your client’s products or are you going to provide your own?  Your decision will affect how your workers are trained and how long it will take them to complete each job.

There are many different products on the market today that will work in all the homes you clean – in fact, that’s how I built my business.  This allowed me to provide consistency in the quality of the cleaning and in the cleaning technique itself.  It also allowed me to have one training program for the workers.

The main problem you could encounter is not having the product you need when you arrive to clean. Can you imagine not having the proper product to clean soap scum from inside the shower stall? Or how about a broken vacuum or not having replacement vacuum bags when you start to vacuum the house!

This is your business and when running a business, you don’t allow clients to tell you how to do your job.  When you have all the answers, they are able to trust you and let you do the work the way you have planned.  I ran into prospects from time-to-time that wanted to tell me what I was going to do and how to do it… quite frankly, I told them we didn’t work that way.  This gave me an opening to tell them the benefits of using my service and allowed them to decide if they wanted to use us or not.  As a new business owner, this is what you should be working towards.

I had much bigger plans, like 1) Building up the business to compete with the franchises in my city 2) Training employees to do the dirty work and 3) Having the ability to sell the business when the time was right.
